Demand Forecast and BOM Entries

What you'll do here:

  • Turn a finished-item forecast into component demand automatically.
  • Create or delete component forecast entries in batch.

Overview

Material Planner extends Business Central's production forecast with automatic BOM component expansion. When you add a forecast entry for a finished item, the app creates matching forecast entries for all components in the item's production BOM. This gives planners a complete view of component demand without manual data entry.

Automatic BOM Expansion

When you insert a production forecast entry for an item, the app reads the item's active BOM version and creates a child forecast entry for each component. The expansion is recursive: if a component is itself a manufactured item, the app also expands its BOM.

The app uses this formula for each component quantity:

Component forecast quantity = Parent forecast quantity × BOM line quantity per × (1 + Scrap% ÷ 100)

The app applies a unit of measure conversion when the BOM header unit of measure differs from the component's base unit of measure.

Each child entry stores:

  • The source item number from the parent entry.
  • The BOM level of the component.
  • The entry number of the parent entry.
  • The user who created the entry.

When you delete a parent forecast entry, the app deletes all child entries linked to it.

To enable or disable automatic expansion, change the Auto Create BOM Forecast Entries setting in setup.

Phantom BOM assemblies

When Insert phantom BOM To Forecast is on in setup, the app also inserts forecast entries for intermediate BOM assemblies, not only for the lowest-level components.

Create BOM Forecast Entries in Batch

Use the Create Related Forecast Entries report to create component forecast entries for existing parent entries without re-entering them.

  1. Search for Create Related Forecast Entries in Business Central.
  2. Set filters for Item No. and Forecast Date to select the parent entries.
  3. Choose OK.

The app creates the same component entries as the automatic trigger would have created on insert.

Delete Automatically Created Entries

Use the Delete Auto. BOM Forecast Entries report to remove component entries that the app created automatically.

  1. Search for Delete Auto. BOM Forecast Entries in Business Central.
  2. Set filters to select the entries to remove.
  3. Choose OK.
