Transport Order Management

Overview

A Transport Order is the central record that tracks a single outbound (or return) consignment in Business Central. It captures all information needed to dispatch goods with a carrier: recipient address, parcel details, billing party, and carrier selection. After dispatch, it stores the consignment ID and tracking link returned by Cargonizer.

How Transport Orders Are Created

When automatic creation is switched on in Consignment Management Setup, Business Central creates the transport order automatically when a sales or transfer shipment is posted. No manual steps are needed.

This is an organisation-wide setting (Automatically create Transport Orders when Orders are Shipped). Business Central evaluates it at posting time. It is not stored on individual documents. See Auto-Create & Auto-Send for the full automation chain.

Manual Creation

Transport orders can also be created on demand — for example from a service order, or directly from the Transport Orders list — and linked to a source document.

Key Fields on a Transport Order

Field Description
Source Document Type Sales Order, Posted Sales Shipment, Service Order, Posted Service Shipment, Transfer Order, Posted Transfer Shipment, or Sales Quote
Source Document No. The linked BC order or shipment number
Consignment ID Assigned by Cargonizer after successful dispatch
Tracking URL Live tracking link from the carrier
Transport Agreement Carrier agreement (e.g., PostNord, DHL)
Product Code Service level (e.g., next-day, economy)
Billing Party Who pays freight: Consignor, Consignee, or Third Party
Message to Carrier Free-text handling instructions sent to the carrier
Message to Consignee Free-text delivery instructions sent to the recipient
Consignor's Reference / Consignee's Reference References printed on the label
Status New, Sent, or Labels Printed

Parcel weight and dimensions are held on the transport order lines (one line per parcel), not on the header.

Transport Order Lines

Each line in a transport order represents one parcel. You can specify per-parcel: - Weight and dimensions (length, width, height) - Volume weight - Dangerous goods classification (see Dangerous Goods)

Sending a Transport Order

Use the Send action (or Send and Print Labels) on the transport order card or list.

On success, Business Central stores the Consignment ID and Tracking URL returned by Cargonizer and prints labels if automatic printing is configured (see Label Printing).

Auto-Send on Shipment Posting

Switch on Automatically Send Transport Orders when Orders are Shipped in Consignment Management Setup to dispatch to Cargonizer immediately when the shipment is posted — no extra step needed. This requires automatic creation to be enabled as well.

Editing Before Dispatch

You can edit a transport order before you send it to Cargonizer. After dispatch (status = Sent), the transport order becomes read-only. This prevents changes that would conflict with the consignment registered in Cargonizer.

From any Posted Sales Shipment, Sales Order, Service Order, or Transfer Order, use the Related Transport Orders action to open the transport orders associated with that document.

Consolidated Consignments

Multiple shipments for the same recipient can be merged into a single transport order before dispatch. See Consolidated Consignments.

Return Shipments

A return transport order can be generated automatically after a successful outbound dispatch. See Return Shipments.
